Young Journalists

Boston High School is happy to announce their continued partnership with The Young Journalist Academy, run by C1 Media and Paradigm Arts. The success story of our newsroom, with its widely published range of articles and columns, is perhaps best told by the choice of university courses in English and Journalism, apprenticeships in Journalism, and subsequent careers in the media industries, as pursued by our former students. Writing for our blog pages helped one ex-student to gain a column on a national car magazine within a couple of months of leaving school. Every year more Young Journalists are professionally trained here at Boston High School. Counselling Service

Boston High School is dedicated to ensuring our students have a confidential counselling service which can be accessed throughout the school year. Physical Education at CGS is a compulsory activity and involves students in a variety of activities – games, gymnastics, dance, fitness and athletics – twice a week.

Young Journalist Academy

The Young Journalist Academy is a programme established in 2008 designed to encourage young people to engage with news and current affairs by creating their own School Newsroom, media literacy projects and working across school departments.

Carre’s Grammar School is one of 10 Secondary Schools involved in the Young Journalist Academy. The School’s Newsroom has had many of its articles and interviews published on the organizations website, a selection of these are available to read to the right.

In September 2003, Carre’s Grammar School was designated as a Specialist Sports College and affiliated to the Youth Sports Trust. A state-of-the-art 3G pitch, unique in its quality within Lincolnshire, was opened in 2007 and refurbished in 2016. Our new Fitness Suite, Specialist rooms and Nutrition Suite opened in February 2011.

For sport, Carre’s is a regional focal point for excellence for students of all ages, staff and members of our community. We work with partner schools to develop Physical Education and Science through outreach work, improved access to facilities and provide training for teachers in other schools. We have also developed an extensive outreach programme with partner primary schools in PE and Science. Recent developments have seen the school increase its commitment to community sport by taking on the management of the Northgate Sports Hall, enabling Carre’s Grammar School and District NK to work in partnership to develop and deliver high quality leisure services in the North Kesteven district.

STEM At University

The Smallpeice Trust is an organisation that works with Universities to offer students a University experience for a variety of STEM subjects. It is aimed at students from Year 8 to 12 and covers courses including; Aerospace, Biomedical science, Engineering, Robotics, Game design, Cyber security and Physics.

There are some family events that are free and others include a multi-day residential stay at a University that incur a cost.

Performing Arts

We participate in Shakespeare Schools Festival where students across all year groups get to perform an adapted 30-minute version of a classic Shakespeare play. The students work with professional actors on the day and perform their final production at Lincoln Drill hall.

Over the past few years we have been involved in Rock Challenge, this is a national dance competition where schools are encouraged to create an 8-minute dance/ theatre performance based on a theme of their choice. Over 100 students from all year groups were involved most recently and we won several awards. Students can take part in this event not just as a performer but as part of the set design team, stage crew, costume and makeup team or as part of the fundraising and promotions team.

The school also do annual school productions. Most recently we did a key stage 3 production of Daisy Pulls it Off ‘by Samuel French. And next year is our whole school Musical.

In addition to extracurricular activities, students that study Drama at both GCSE and A level have the opportunity to watch professional theatre in the west end and participate in workshops at the famous pineapple studios.

The Ross Diploma

The Ross Diploma is here to help our Year 7 students make the very most of their first two years in our school. It is there to help Year 7 and Year 8 students record all that they do and to help them focus and inspire them to do even more as they get ready for GCSEs. There are a number of elements in which students will score points, and their grand total of points will qualify them for a gold, silver or bronze award at the end of Year 8. Approximately two thirds of the points are awarded for academic skills. These points are awarded at the end of Year 8 after their exams and indicate the level they have achieved in each area. The core subjects (Maths, English and Science) are all compulsory. Students also get to pick their best four subjects from a list of others

Lincolnshire has fifteen Grammar Schools and because of this competition for entry is low compared to the Grammar Schools in the south. At King Edward’s we have around about 250 pupils sitting the test for 120 places with approximately 150 pupils passing each year. The chances of getting a place at King Edward’s are therefore very high and the ability range is also wider than in Grammar Schools in the south of the country.

Physical Education is at the heart of the school. Both students and staff are fully involved in the participation and running of extracurricular clubs. Our curriculum is broad and diverse, ensuring that all students experience success and engage in lifelong sport.

Our school is fortunate enough to have a large sports hall, use of the main hall and extensive playing fields on site. We also make full use of the local Swimming Pool, Fitness suite, Tennis club, Squash club and Astroturf facilities.

As a department we encourage participation and competition in a variety of sports with teams in Football, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Athletics, Cross Country, Badminton, Rounders, Table Tennis and Cricket. For the vast majority of sports we progress through to county and regional level.

Individuals from QEGS are frequently selected for County teams; we also boast several Academy and National performers within the school in an array of activities.

During the year we arrange many visits and expeditions of broad educational value, related to particular subjects or outdoor pursuits. Our sailing club, for example, operates at Hykeham Sailing Club, where students learn to sail and develop the skills required for competitive and recreational sailing.

Trips

We are twinned with a private school in the south of France (near Saint Etienne) and with a gymnasium near Hannover in Germany. The geography department organises trips to Iceland and Italy annually.

Other visits abroad in recent years have included trips to view Art Galleries in Paris, London, Barcelona and Madrid. Larger residential visits with community projects, that students can get involved in include Project Nepal (Global Action), Operation Wallacea and World Challenge to various locations.

Performing Arts

Our school has a long tradition of successful music and drama. Peripatetic music staff provide instrumental tuition and many of our pupils are involved in our weekly extra curricular music programme including a wide range of choirs, large and small ensembles catering for all abilities and all music genres and styles. In addition, the school is a Music Centre Partner with the Lincolnshire Music Service, which has extended opportunities to experience music in a wider context both as a performer and as an audience member. Most recently this has included the Lincolnshire Schools Prom (Embassy Theatre, Skegness), visit of the Jazz Ambassadors and performing at the Music for Youth Festival Fringe in Birmingham. The Music Department encourages pupils to join the county orchestras and a large proportion of our pupils do this. We have an annual concert programme including 3 formal concerts, a jazz evening and several recital evenings. Our Drama and Music departments also work collaboratively to produce a musical production bi-annually.

Business

Formerly a Business & Enterprise College, students are encouraged to be enterprising and departments all have good links with the business world. Students can set up their own businesses, trading in school, and there is a venture fund to support them.

Business and Enterprise is the school specialism. The key concepts behind enterprise are embedded in everything we do in school. In addition to Business Studies forming part of the curriculum from Year 7, students have many opportunities to explore and develop their enterprise skills.

Business Links

Each subject area has at least one link with a local business where the learning which takes place within the classroom can be contextualised through project based work or problem solving activities which relate to the work of the business with whom the link is made. Students may visit the business to see its work in action or may meet members of staff who come into school to present to classes or work with students on case studies or skill based activities.

Embedding Enterprise

The school participates in a number of embedding enterprise schemes run by our local Education and Business Partnership. These are subject based problem solving exercises which allow students the opportunity to create imaginative solutions to problems which businesses may find in their field of work. Students work as a team and present their schemes to a panel who judge their work against competitors from other schools in the County. Recent challenges have included an RAF aviation challenge, a radio based challenge with Siren FM and a music challenge with University College, Lincoln, which the school won last year.

QEGS Enterprise

Students have the opportunity to set up and run their own business in school. They must present a business plan to a panel of students and staff, outlining their product details, costs, market and unique selling point and then may bid for financial support from the school to help them with set-up costs. The panel then judges each application and selects the businesses which will be offered the opportunity to trade in school. Each business is provided with a regular position from which to trade and receives support with the safe banking of money. Businesses run in school commit to donating 20% of any profit made to the chosen school charity for the respective year.

Year 7 Induction

When students join us in Y7 there is an extensive programme of support offered, as children moving from relatively small primary schools are bound to feel some apprehension when moving to secondary school. This support includes:

Maintaining close links with local primary schools.

Our Head of Lower School visiting children in the familiar surroundings of their primary school to offer reassurance and address any concerns as early as possible.

Running “master classes” in the summer term of Y6 when they will meet their new form tutor and participate in extension activities.

An Induction Day in July where new students spend the day at Queen Elizabeth’s, meet their new form tutor and experience a range of lessons and new routines, looked after by members of our sixth form. There is a meeting for parents in the afternoon, after which they meet their child’s new form tutor and have an opportunity to purchase uniform items from the school uniform shop.

A Y7 Activities Session on the first Friday evening of the school year, when students have the opportunity to get to know their form. The session ends with a barbecue to which parents are invited.

A “Meet the Tutors” Evening in October, where parents can check on their child’s progress and share any concerns.

Vertical Form Tutoring

One of the distinguishing characteristics of our school is vertical forms. This means that each student is in a tutor group with approximately twenty other students drawn from across every year in the school. Most arrive in Year 7,

so are the youngest in the group, and benefit from the experience and support

Sports

Sport plays a huge role in life at SGS. All students, including the Sixth Form, take part in core PE lessons and inter-House competitions. Students develop their sporting skills in our superb Sports Hall, on our extensive sports fields and in outstanding specialist facilities such as our new cricket nets.

In 2015 we proudly achieved the status of “Best state school for sport in Lincolnshire” as deemed by School Sport Magazine.

Performing Arts

In 2006, six new English classrooms, two ICT suites, a drama studio and a new school library were added, allowing for conversion of the old library into classrooms for use by the history and politics department. Hong Kong – Macau International Students Program

The Grammar Gazette claims to be the longest running school newspaper in the country.

The Grammar Gazette is the student-run newspaper produced fortnightly by Boston Grammar School. There are reporters and photographers from every year within the school, and the editor is a sixth-from student, responsible for helping the younger students and compiling the articles into comprehensive editions.

Since its inception in 1992 the Grammar Gazette has gone from strength to strength and is, as stated by The Times, the longest running school newspaper in the country. It is available on-line to each student, and hard copies are available in the library. Several reporters have gone on to study journalism at university, including Harry Parkhill, a journalist and reporter for BBC Radio Lincolnshire, and Adam Shergold, a key sports reporter for the Daily Mail.

In the future we look forward to broadening our horizons, including working closely with a local radio station to enable the students to present information to the town.

Candidates are asked to take a Verbal Reasoning Test and a Non-Verbal Reasoning Test, either in their own Primary Schools or in the Grammar School where they have registered, according to the area.

Yes. Commercial versions of reasoning tests are available, but GLA advise that such additional preparation is unnecessary and may be unhelpful.

Specialisation

The King’s School was endowed by Richard Fox, Bishop of Winchester in 1528 although the Old School and the Master’s House beside it were dated by Pevsner in Buildings of England, at 1497.

Trips

Our academic curriculum is supported and enriched by an extensive programme of educational visits (art galleries, museums etc.), by field work in subjects such as Geography, by language exchange programmes (with schools in Germany and China) and by visitors to the school. The Modern Foreign Languages Departments organise several annual trips and the History Department organise an annual trip to the battlefields of northern Europe.

Combined Cadet Forces

The Combined Cadet Force is a thriving extra-curricular activity at King’s. Membership is optional and is open to all pupils from Year 9 and above. It consists of Army and RAF sections. The CCF offers pupils the chance to develop powers of leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance through military themed activities.

Each year the CCF holds training camps, where the skills learnt at school can be put to the test and developed further via expeditions and more formal training or team building exercises. Much fun is also had participating in other adventurous activities such as orientation and kayaking, for example.

The school has received national recognition through success in competitions and exercises in which cadets from King’s have competed against contingents from well known independent schools. A number of students have gone on to pursue successful Service careers.

Sports

In recent years there have been sports tours to South Africa, Australia, Canada and Barbados. Each year there is also a ski trip to either America or Europe.

King’s individuals and teams enjoy considerable local and national success. It is our aim to maintain the strength and breadth of sport at King’s. We believe strongly that representing the school is a privilege, and our policy is that if an individual is selected to play for the school, then that represents a priority engagement over other activities.

There is a very strong tradition of sporting excellence at King’s. PE and Games form part of the curriculum for all pupils. Our aim is to involve as many pupils as possible by offering a wide range of activities, during and after the school day.

Waterpolo

Water Polo is a minority sport and not everyone in Grantham knows that the town has one of the leading clubs in the country. For a small town the success of The King’s School, Grantham, is astonishing. The school won many titles and did the double in 1981, 1990, 1995 and 2000. They are in the top 3 successful schools in the country over the years.

King’s School Water Polo has produced 40 to 50 internationals from the school over the years. Water Polo is the hardest physical sport in the world. Players continue to play at university and many are seen in National League Competitions for years to come after leaving King’s.

Rugby

At the King’s School, we are extremely proud of our sporting record and achievements in rugby. Across the spectrum of both the 15 and 7 a side codes, we enjoy a national reputation for producing teams and individuals who are either winners or regarded as somewhat tough to beat! Each year, numerous students earn NLD (Nottingham, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire) honours in rugby and several have gone on to represent the Midlands.

Drama

Drama plays a major part in the extra-curricular life of the school. Drama Club is open to anyone in Year 7, 8 and 9 and runs one lunchtime a week, requiring no previous experience. Junior Drama Colours are awarded for excellent attendance and commitment.

Students are encouraged to take on the roles of Stage Manager, Props, Costumes, Front of House, Lighting and Sound so they can still be involved but not necessarily as an actor – A level Art students usually paint the set.

Music

Practical music thrives at King’s. There are a wealth of different activities on offer and students are encouraged to make the most of all of these opportunities. There are unparalleled opportunities for performance, whether it be as a soloist or as part of a small or large ensemble. Over 200 instrumental lessons take place each week and approximately a third of the school learn to play a musical instrument. Seventeen instrumental teachers deliver these lessons.
