Specialisation

Boys school.

In 1995 the school was awarded Technology College Status. In 2005 we were identified as one of the first High Performing Specialist Schools and, in 2006, took on a second specialism in languages. Following an Outstanding Ofsted grading in 2007, Beths became, in 2008, a National Support School. In 2009 the school added a third specialism to its portfolio, as a Leadership Partner School.

The international dimension offered by the language specialism is of great value in the modern world. We offer Mandarin Chinese as well as French, German and Spanish, and the various opportunities that arise include visits to China. In May 2010 we became a ‘Confucius Classroom’ – a hub school for Mandarin Chinese.

Among the various ways that we seek to develop the students’ leadership skills are the thriving School Council, student-led assemblies, the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Mandarin Excellence Programme is a new intensive language programme funded by the Department for Education, which will see at least 5000 school students in England on track to fluency in Mandarin Chinese by 2020.

Participating schools – with support from UCL Institute of Education and the British Council – are at the forefront of delivering the programme and funding is available to support successful delivery.

Students on the programme will study eight hours of Mandarin Chinese a week – including four hours of classroom taught lessons – with selected groups of students beginning from Year 7.

Arts

The school has a strong tradition in the arts, particularly in music and drama. There are purpose built facilities for these subjects and students are encouraged to study them at GCSE, A Level and beyond.

The school also has a strong tradition in fine art which has developed in recent years into a wider consideration of alternative media. Student work is regularly shown throughout the school.

Sports

Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School has a local, regional and national reputation for sporting excellence, particularly in the traditional team games. A strong focus is placed on competitive sport against other institutions and students are expected to represent the school when selected.

The school is fortunate to possess outstanding external facilities and continues to work hard to improve and enhance these for the benefit of all students. The school’s Jubilee Pavilion, contains a dance studio, a high quality classroom and a number of changing rooms for competitive and curricular use.

The main winter sports are rugby, hockey and netball. School teams exist at all levels in these sports and a very competitive fixture list is followed against many of the best schools in the South East. Our teams have been successful at county, regional and national level. At cross country and athletics, school teams consistently outperform local rivals. Cricket, tennis and athletics are the major summer sports. Regular county representation is achieved by students and full international honours have been gained by students in a variety of sports, most recently athletics and rugby.

Technology

CSGS has made a significant investment in cloud facilities. By utilising Office 365, we have moved shared resources to the Microsoft SharePoint, which provides access to the multiple sites and documents libraries for effortless collaboration and better productivity. This is now used by all staff and pupils. Pupils also have access to the CSGS remote apps which can be used to access Digital textbooks like French, German and Science textbooks remotely.

Trips

There are a large number of school journeys organised as part of the curriculum. Regular visits continue to take place to Germany and France. The Whitsun break also provides an opportunity for an adventure holiday to Spain. Other visits have included Year 12 ‘A’ Level French students going to France, Year 9 pupils touring the Rhineland, Year 8 travelling to Normandy, a group of Year 7 pupils going to Switzerland, ‘A’ Level Field courses in Geography and Biology, the annual ski trip and a Maths trip to New York as well as a myriad of day visits.

“The Mathematics school trip to New York was the best school trip I have ever been on. It was an amazing experience and will never be forgotten!”  Year 10 Pupil

Former Students Association

The Sedcopians represent the former students’ association of the school, which remains an important element of the school’s tradition. They hold an annual dinner and arrange winter and summer sporting competitions against senior school sides.

New Facilities

A considerable investment programme in new facilities is unfolding at our school. Aside from a range of well resourced specialist teaching areas, the school continues to add new buildings. The Legacy Building providing modern facilities for all Sixth Form students and the Performance Building to support teaching of the arts are the most recent additions.
