Kent Test Paper - From Official Kent Council Website
The tests are multiple-choice with a separate answer sheet. They are marked by an automated marking machine.
The first test will be an English and Maths paper and will take 1 hour. Each section will involve a 5 minute practice exercise followed by a 25 minute test. The English section will involve a comprehension exercise as well as some additional questions drawn from a set designed to test literacy skills.
The second test will be a reasoning paper. It will take about 1 hour, including the practice sections and questions. It will contain a verbal reasoning section and a non-verbal reasoning section of roughly the same length. The non-verbal reasoning will be split into short sections, administered and timed individually.
There will also be a writing exercise which will not be marked but may be used by a local headteacher panel as part of the headteacher assessment stage of the process. 40 minutes will be allowed for the writing task, including 10 minutes planning time.

Parents in Kent face a considerable challenge when completing their CAF (Common Application Form). The Admissions Criteria for schools differ for almost every school in the County and must be studied extremely carefully by prospective parents.
Some schools known as the “super-selectives” allocate places by score, but there may be geographic limits imposed as well. Other schools use distance or parish boundaries as the main criterion for admission. Schools that do not use score to allocate places may have rules about siblings taking priority. (It is illegal under the school Admissions Code to use score to allocate places and give priority to siblings.)
https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/schools/regions/kent-11-plus
The Dover, Shepway, Mayfield and Highsted Tests do not qualify you for admission to any other grammar school.
Six Kent grammar schools also offer places through their own tests. These are: Dover Grammar School for Boys; Dover Grammar School for Girls; Folkestone School for Girls; The Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone; Highsted Grammar, Sittingbourne; and Mayfield Grammar School, Gravesend. Eligibility for admission depends on success at either the school's own test or the Kent Test, although if the school is oversubscribed, as happened with four of the six schools for 2020 entry (excluding Dover Boys and Highsted), places are awarded through the oversubscription criteria which do not take into account which test was passed to achieve eligibility.

Fiat Lux Programme
In September 2019 we introduced a new initiative – the “Fiat Lux Programme” - for our Year 7 students. This is designed to raise aspirations and encourage students to aim as high as they can in all that they do. Achievements are recorded using students' Microsoft Office 365 Form Team and can be entered whether at school or at home. Indeed, encourage parents to sit down with their sons at home and to look at the types of achievement that he can record. We also encourage as much evidence as possible to be attached to any achievement – for example photos, web links, certificates. All these items will help to create a full and strong record of achievement and success that we very much hope will allow our students to recognise just how talented and capable they are and to remind them always to look up and aim as high as possible.

Specialist Teachers
Uniquely, we have reduced the number of teachers at Key Stage 3 by using specialist teachers who are highly skilled in delivering a range of subjects. This additional time spent with students helps create deep and long lasting relationships. Teachers are very aware of individual student progress and pastoral needs.
https://gravesendgrammar.com/about/our-approach/
Smoother transition to Year 7 – students have fewer teachers because we have developed the use of Key Stage 3 ‘specialists’ who teach boys several subjects in Year 7. This makes for better relationships and better understanding of individual students.

International Links
We are not only connected locally, but we have also built international links through sports tours and worldwide expeditions. In Languages there are a number of exchanges with schools including College St. Exupery in Amiens, College Maguerite Duras in Montelimar, and College de’Huis in Paris.
https://gravesendgrammar.com/about/partnerships/
Trips
GGS has been to Africa, China, India, South and North America and New Zealand on sporting trips, for World Challenge expeditions, or on school exchanges.
For many students the highlight of Year 7 is Curriculum Development Week in July, when they spend three nights under canvas in the Ashdown Forest. Year 7 Camp is one of those experiences that sticks with students and is often referenced when recalling their best times in the School.
For several years, Year 9 students have benefited from taking part on a Rona Sailing Trip – the aim is to provide opportunities for young people to acquire those attributes of a seaman, namely: a sense of responsibility, resourcefulness and teamwork which will help them throughout their lives.
Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to take part in a University Taster Course, to give them an insight into university life, attending lectures, learning how to management budgets and experiencing an overnight stay in Halls of Residence.

Queen Elizabeth’s commitment to providing opportunities for students to experience a global dimension has included cultural exchanges with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School in Kerala, India; Lycee St. Jacques, Hazebrouck, France; and the 60 year old partnership with Albertus Magnus Gymnasium, Cologne, Germany.
Global Learning Program
We are delighted to announce that Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School was chosen in July 2015 to become an Expert Centre for the Global Learning Programme (GLP) in England.
The GLP is a programme of support for schools that can help to enhance teaching and learning about global issues at Key Stages 2 and 3.
The GLP focuses on developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of global challenges through subject-based learning in key curriculum areas. It helps pupils to think critically about the issues, and develop skills and values as they consider actions that they and others can take to overcome them.
As an Expert Centre, Queen Elizabeth’s is acting as a hub to provide local, peer-led training and support for teachers in our network of Partner Schools. This involves hosting half-termly support meetings to help them to identify each school’s particular training priorities and through the GLP website access the most appropriate professional development to meet their needs.

Thinking School
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School is an accredited Thinking School. By becoming a Thinking School we are displaying our commitment to putting thinking at the heart of everything we do.

Year 7 have responded with great enthusiasm to the course and crucially have begun to apply many of these concepts to their other subjects. We have also incorporated the core ideas from our “Thinking Skills” course across the curriculum, so that students throughout the school can develop their thinking skills.

Trips
We have a vast array of educational visits with over 140 taking place in the last academic year alone, covering all year groups - students have visited sites from Kent to London, France, Belgium, Iceland, Washington DC and are due to visit Namibia & Cuba in Summer 2020; there have been visits to museums, galleries, theatres, festivals, movie studios, concerts and areas of scientific and geographic interest exploring sports, the arts, the sciences and political & social history.
Two new courses introduced for first teaching September 2017, Business Studies & Health and Social Care, seek to provide a more vocational option for students to complement their more academic compulsory curriculum.
https://www.folkestonegirls.kent.sch.uk/index.php/curriculum/curriculum-overview
Curriculum
All girls choose 2 options from the Ebacc suite of subjects; History, Geography or a modern foreign language (from a choice of French or Spanish). Whilst language study is encouraged and indeed languages are chosen by the majority of girls, our traditional academic curriculum does not currently compel girls to study a Modern Foreign Language and instead we prefer to offer girls a greater degree of choice within their academic curriculum.

Careers
Careers education ranges from workplace visits in year 8, to mock job interviews in years 10 and 12 to work experience and internships post 16.

Test Type: The Kent Test (GL)

Specialisation
Encourages a lifelong love of learning, enhanced by the specialism in Music & English and in Science & Maths.
https://www.judd.online/page/?title=Aims+and+Objectives&pid=11
Music
At The Judd School we are keen to encourage and support our students in the widest possible range of musical activities, both within and beyond the usual curricular music lessons.
The music practice rooms and the recording facilities can be used with permission by both rock groups and classical ensembles.
On a weekly basis many pupils participate in extra-curricular musical activities with regular concerts throughout the year. Membership of choirs, ensembles and orchestras is open to all pupils of the school, whether they have music lessons in school or not.
Sports
The School has a national reputation in each of its major team sports, rugby and cross-country in the winter, cricket and athletics in the summer. We believe, however, participation is as important as elite performance, so the school runs open practice sessions in the younger years where all are welcome and fields C, D, E and even F teams when possible. We have recently added incredible facilities at Vizards, six rugby pitches, two cricket squares and a fabulous 3G rugby pitch, which is revolutionising our approach. There are also opportunities to play tennis and basketball in the younger years, whilst the range grows considerably as students get older.
Year 7 Induction
Primary Visits
Pastoral care starts in the summer term of Year 6, with our aim being to visit every one of our new students in their primary school. Visits are generally made by the House team; a teacher will meet with your son in the primary environment, which should enable them to feel safe and happy to discuss issues about their forthcoming change of school or ask any questions.
Induction Trip
During his first month at Judd, your son will embark on an overnight induction trip, to further enhance the links the boys create with their fellow House members and members of the pastoral team. The boys participate in a mixture of mental and physical activities that are designed to encourage them to work together to overcome challenges.
Induction Day
The induction day for new Year 7 students takes place in July. Boys are invited to attend the whole day to take part in a mixture of taster lessons, team building activities and to experience our excellent dining room for the first time with a free hot lunch! During the day they will meet up again with their form tutor and also meet the future Year 8s who will be in their form.

Year 7 Induction
Transitioning to secondary school is an important step in every young pupil's journey in education and can be a daunting time. To make this transition as easy as possible Norton Knatchbull School implements several points and actions before the start of the year to help our new pupils adjust and adapt quickly to their new environment.
Activities Include:
- African Drumming Workshop run by NKS at Repton Manor primary school
- Open Afternoons for Year 5 students at NKS
- Taster Mornings in Sport, Drama, Art, Product Design and Music at NKS for Year 5 students
- Art Workshops run by NKS at Bodsham primary school
- Year 6 Transition Days at NKS for incoming Year 7 students and their parents

Sports
Norton Knatchbull participates in a variety of sports across all age groups, competing in competetions and against other regional and local schools.
Year 7 and 11 students won the football championship in the Ashford district in the 2019-2020 season.
https://www.nks.kent.sch.uk/school-life/sports
Work Experience
We encourage all of our students to undertake a period of meaningful work experience. This can be achieved by using time within the weekly timetable/structure, the enrichment time within the timetable, within the focused enrichment week at the end of the summer term, during school holidays.
Most students benefit from work experience to inform career choices, develop the relevant occupational skills and help instil the attitudes and behaviours expected at work.
Work experience can take many forms including work tasters, participation in social action projects, or a work placement.
Work experience should be an integral part of most students’ study programme and in particular for students choosing to enter a particular occupation or profession.

Expansion
Our vision for a new Digital Learning Centre has been endorsed by Kent County Council and we were awarded £2m in July 2018 to build this facility.
The Digital Learning Centre will bring together the technology changes which are currently affecting all of us in our day to day lives. It will bring these changes into focus in a modern, interactive learning environment.
Existing subjects which make increasing use of digital information (such as Product Design, Science, Maths, Art and Music) will continue to be taught the required curriculum but the opportunity will be taken to explore with students the reasons for using digital technology and how it is likely to develop and be used in the field in question.
For example, in the case of AI, the emphasis will not be upon the mathematical formulae and algorithms so much as helping students to gain a better understanding of AI and how they can work with it and use it in the future.

The Skinners’ School
Entrance Exam Dates:

Test Type: The Kent Test (GL)
https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-places/kent-test#tab-3
Specialisation
School established in 1887.
The Skinners' School is a Specialist Science School and has gained a second specialism in Mathematics & Computing. We are interested in developing projects that use the tools of science and maths in an engineering context through our STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) / Sustainability programme.
In September 2012 we introduced STEM as a discrete subject for Years 7-9. This exciting and innovative curriculum initiative has developed from the STEM work shown below.
https://www.skinners-school.co.uk/school/stem
Our relatively small size allows us to know and cherish every pupil, and to bring out the best in each individual. We also have a deserved reputation for excellent pastoral care and for supporting pupils with special educational needs.
Sports
Skinners’ has a significant reputation for sporting achievement. The school excels at the traditional sports of rugby, cricket, hockey and athletics, and takes full advantage of our spacious playing fields at Southfields. We also have national and regional champions in cross-country running and swimming. Our Sports Hall is fundamental to the vision of widening participation as well as excellence: as a result basketball, handball, badminton, table tennis, climbing and personal fitness are key parts of the program.
Our sports centre comprises a 4 court badminton hall which can cater for a range of other sports, a climbing wall and a state of the art health and fitness room with both free and fixed weights room and cardiovascular section, as well as a spinning studio. The playing fields consist of 5 rugby pitches and 1 football pitch during the winter and during the summer it converts into a 400m running track and three cricket pitches.
https://www.skinners-school.co.uk/school/sport/
Music
At Key Stage 3 we teach an enjoyable mixture of theoretical, listening, composing and performing skills.
At GCSE boys hone their acquired skills in popular or classical styles to gain high levels of success and prepare for further study.
Music at A level follows a rigorous course requiring both performing at a high level and theoretical skills – courses are tailored to meet the individuals’ strengths and enthusiasms.
Where appropriate, pupils are encouraged to enter Associated Board or Trinity/Guildhall grade exams as a gauge of their progress. The certificates gained are useful additional qualifications when it comes to further education applications.
https://www.skinners-school.co.uk/school/music
Expansion
Our Sixth Form accommodation is patently inadequate. We want to double the space available to develop extensive private study facilities, designed both to develop intellectual collaboration and silent study.
Our current School Library is a hive of activity and learning. It houses just 8 computers and under 20 study spaces. This in a school of over 1000 pupils. Our new library will be three times the size and can become a true learning resource centre for the whole school, with reading and research at its heart.

Transition To Year 7
Students joining us are supported through their transition from primary schools by Learning Mentors and a dedicated Student Adviser who provides a crucial link between home and school.
Global Perspective
As an IBO World School we proactively develop international mindedness throughout the School. We participate in Mathematics Challenges in the UK and Holland and students undertake a range of language programmes and study tours abroad, as far afield as Europe, Africa, and North America.
Unusual Opportunities
From textiles to 3D printers, there is something for everyone including producing shows for the School’s radio station and writing for the School magazine.
Sports
Everyone is encouraged to participate in some form of sporting pursuit and we offer a wide range of activities including hockey, netball, cricket, rugby, and gymnastics. We have a strong tradition of sporting success both regionally and nationally.
Sixth Form
All Sixth Form students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. We believe that the IB Diploma offers students a breadth and depth of study that sets them apart from others and more fully prepares them for university and adult life.
Extra-Curricular STEM Programs
We aim to enhance the curriculum delivered at TGS through a variety of lunchtime clubs and projects and well as encouraging participation in external competitions and courses. We have an up to date STEM board situated on the way to Physics with flyers and other information for you to take home.

Facilities
The school opened in 1905 and is situated in 14 acres in Deakin Leas, Tonbridge. We are well resourced with modern facilities. The Hands Building was opened in 2009 and offers state-of-the-art classrooms, a drama and dance studio and a sports hall. A number of our Science laboratories were refurbished after having been awarded a grant from the Wolfson Foundation in 2012. The IBarn, a dedicated sixth form study centre, was opened in September 2015.

Specialisation
TWGGS has an enviable reputation for excellence in Music, English, Drama and Art; and involvement in the Arts Award is exceptionally high.
Music
A remarkable number of orchestras, bands and choirs perform throughout the year in public, in concerts and for dramatic productions. Foreign tours, domestic competitions, including chamber choirs, and performances for local charities are all regular events. The annual Christmas Carol Service in St. John’s Church is a notable ‘sellout’.
Stage Productions
Creative talents are harnessed in many aspects of drama, including acting (of course), costume and scenery design and manufacture, writing scripts and producing plays. A short stroll around the school will demonstrate why TWGGS is considered to be an institution of excellence as far as Art and Design are concerned.
Sports
School awarded the Sports England Sports Mark
TWGGS achieves outstanding success in hockey, netball, gymnastics, tennis, cricket and dance, and school teams repeatedly reach District, County and National finals. Similarly, individuals gain representative honours at County, Regional and National levels in both team and individual sports. The all-weather pitch provides a superb facility on which to hone girls’ talents.
From football to rounders, cricket to trampolining, cheerleading to cross-country, there really is something for everyone.
Cadets
We are proud to be the only girls’ state school in the country to have our own Combined Cadet Force, with both army and navy units, which firmly espouse the values of loyalty, discipline, commitment, integrity, courage and respect for others.
Trips
For older girls, there are educational visits to Russia and Iceland, a ski trip, exchanges to France, Germany, Spain and India, a True Adventure expedition to Bolivia, and a trip to Ghana, where girls teach in schools alongside a small charity, with which the school is linked, contributing significantly to the building of a girls’ high school.
Pastoral Care
TWGGS has a well-earned reputation for outstanding pastoral care: our aim is that no girl is overlooked or ‘lost’. Pupils are encouraged to care for each other with Sixth Formers offering help, guidance and support to the younger girls. Each girl has a Form Tutor who has particular responsibility for monitoring her academic progress and general well-being. It is with her Form Tutor that each pupil follows courses in Personal, Social, Health and Careers Education
Year 7 Induction
There are a number of schemes in place at TWGGS which are designed to make pupils feel welcome and to make the transition from Year 6 to 7 as easy as possible; new Year 7s quickly feel like they are very much a part of the school. There is an introductory day at Carroty Wood Activity Centre, which is a wonderful opportunity to make friends within the year group, and this, alongside the school’s Buddy System, where girls are paired with a pupil from the year above to offer support and guidance in the first year, ensure girls quickly feel at ease.

Before starting at the school in September, new students are encouraged to take part in our induction programme (run in July) when they can familiarise themselves with the school and get to meet others in their year group. They also meet their form tutor from the specialist Year 7 Tutor Team. On joining in September, link students are responsible for showing new Year 7s around and making sure they know where all the school facilities are.
Additional Help
On entry all boys sit baseline cognitive ability tests and a literacy screening test. Boys whose literacy skills need support will follow a programme of intervention for one hour a week in a small group of up to six students. Boys who have difficulties with spelling and handwriting can be offered extra help. For those students with severe dyslexia, one-to-one weekly lessons will be offered on a termly basis. All students placed on the AEN register will be reviewed twice yearly to make sure good progress is being made.
Trips
We also offer a range residential trips including the following: Year 7 Paris, Year 8 water sports, Year 9 History (Ypres), Year 10 Spanish (Madrid), Year 10/11 Geography (Iceland), Year 10 History (Berlin), Year 12: English Literature (Paris), Spanish Exchange, and Business and Economics (Munich). World Challenge and Outlook Expeditions trips are also offered. Recent trips have included Nepal and Borneo.
Careers
In May 2011 we became a recognised Centre of Excellence for Enterprise Education.
The school is proud of its work with local, national and international companies. Year 10 students will typically complete a week’s work experience, either sourced with our work experience agency, Education Business Partnership Kent, or self-arranged. Placements have ranged from multinationals such as Credit Suisse and Media Com, to local solicitors and accountants. The school also has an excellent partnership with AXA-PPP, who have run enterprise and marketing days with students, as well as offering additional work experience opportunities.
The sixth form offers a vast range of opportunities to engage with employers. Firms have come in to give career focussed talks to students to help them on their future pathways. In Term 6, all students are offered an interview with a professional from the world of business based
on their UCAS personal statement. From this they offer constructive feedback on interview technique, and targets to develop to hone their skills.

Specialisation
Our Engineering Specialism is embedded into many aspects of the school’s curriculum as well as supporting a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. These include an exceptional record for ‘F1 in Schools’.
The school was designated as a Specialist School with Engineering College status from September 2004 followed on 1 November 2006 by a £1.35m teaching building, called the ‘Evans Building’ being officially opened. The building incorporated 12 teaching rooms and a purpose-built engineering suite for design teaching.
In 2009 the school embarked on its second specialism as a member of the Raising Achievement Partnership Programme. This work initially focused on supporting the learning in local and regional schools but in 2010 extended as support of the British Council to work alongside and support schools in Sub Saharan Africa.
The school has a fantastic enrichment and extension programme and in 2010 was awarded the Quality in Extended Schools kitemark and Dartford Sports Partnership Platinum award. The school is also recognised as an Investor in Careers School, with work related experiences embedded into school life from Year 7 to 13. In addition the school has held Investors in People for over ten years.
