Trips
School trips, both home and abroad, feature strongly throughout all year groups and provide opportunity for fieldwork studies, curriculum enhancement, heightened cultural awareness and of course, enjoyment and fun. In a typical school year, there will be fieldwork trips in Geography, Art, History, Economics, Law, Business Studies, Mathematics and language enrichment as well as holidays overseas. In recent years we have visited the USA, Iceland, Paris (Eurodisney), Spain, Germany and China. Day and evening outings may include musical and theatre productions alongside team-building activities.
Duke of Edinburgh
Surrounded by beautiful countryside, BRGS is ideally situated to encourage both an appreciation of the environment and a healthy interest in outdoor pursuits. All students are offered the chance of adventure and exploration through geography field trips. In addition, the school runs the highly popular and successful Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme where pupils can pursue their personal development programme through bronze, silver and gold levels.
Careers Guidance
Students begin working towards developing a career perspective from year 7 through PSHCE lessons, form time activities and assemblies plus a wide range of other resources, services and opportunities. All pupils have access to independent careers advice via the school's Independent Careers Advisor. The school currently uses Start, one of the UK's most popular and reputable online career services that any pupil and parent can sign up to.
During year 9, students attend a careers fair and a Next Steps Event to receive advice from staff and people in industry to help them select a range of subjects to study to GCSE level throughout years 10 and 11.
In year 10, all students have a week out of school on work experience and are also given the opportunity to have a one to one guidance session with a qualified careers advisor.
Pupils continue to be supported through to year 13 to help prepare them for their next steps. We also subscribe to Unifrog, an excellent online careers service aimed at helping students choose the right University, Apprenticeship or alternative option.
The school evaluates the impact of it's careers programme through student voice, student destination data (at post-16 and post-18) and mapping against the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Music
The school has a particularly strong reputation for music. There are two choirs, an Orchestra, a Woodwind Ensemble, two brass ensembles, a classical guitar ensemble, a flute group, a string ensemble and a Swing Band. Regular concerts are given, both in school and in the wider community. The Swing Band toured Malta in October 2012 and visited and performed several concerts in Budapest in July 2014. The annual Carol Service is held in Clitheroe Parish Church. Musical drama productions are staged regularly. Workshops are held with visiting professional musicians and visits are made to musical performances. Individual music lessons are offered in orchestral strings, woodwind, brass, drum kit and orchestral percussion, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar and voice. Students are also given every encouragement to participate in extra-curricular music activities.
It is our aim to provide a wide range of musical opportunities to enable each student to fulfil his/her musical interests and potential.
Facilities
The Main School site has recently benefitted from the addition of our new Sports Hall which has further enhanced the excellent sports facilities at the school. These include tennis courts, a full size 3G pitch and extensive playing fields. The Sports Hall provides a seated venue for 700 people, hosting our assemblies and many school events throughout the year.
The Library has been recently refurbished and provides a space for students to study during breaks and lunchtimes. It is also home to a number of extra curricular activities and many of our student support programmes.
The Language Centre includes 3 dedicated classrooms and an interactive Language Laboratory. We also have 4 other dedicated IT rooms, 3 of which are available for use by students outside of lesson time.
Students are taught in specialist rooms including 6 Science Laboratories.

Trips Abroad
Regular exchanges and visits are conducted through the Modern Languages
Department to France, Germany and Spain. The Sixth Form offers many opportunities to join international expeditions to places such as, Beijing, Argentina, the French Alps and Honduras/Mozambique/South Africa (Operation Wallacea).
The PE department run a Year 7 Football/Netball trip to the Isle of Man and in October 2015 are running a football tour to New York (past venues have been Barcelona, Stuttgart, Milan, Valencia and Madrid). Every two years there is a water sports holiday to France and, in the Sixth Form, A Level PE students take part in trips to Lancaster, Leeds Beckett and Loughborough universities where they experience top class facilities and meet top level professionals. Every two years a skiing party is organised and skiing teams normally compete in the NW England Ski Championships and National Championships.
School Prizes for Attainment and Progress
The school organises an Awards Evening annually at which prizes are awarded for attainment and for effort and progress. Prizes of book tokens are awarded in Years 7 - 10 in the Main School and in Year 12.
Prizes are also awarded for outstanding achievement at GCSE Level and subject prizes are awarded at Advanced Level. In addition, a number of scholarships, which provide a one-off payment towards university expenses, are given to those students who achieve excellent overall results in their A2 examinations.
In this way we are able to publicly recognise and celebrate the achievements and efforts made by our students.
Careers Education Information
Careers education and an understanding of the world of business and enterprise form an integral part of the curriculum throughout all key stages. Students are encouraged to research their options and are guided to use the careers’ (CEIAG) library and computer software systems.
In Year 8 students attend an ‘Enterprise Day’. All students undertake a period of work experience in Year 10, followed by an ‘Enterprise Day’ in the summer. A full programme of advice and support is provided in Year 11, including outside agencies where appropriate. Students have the chance to take part in Young Enterprise (YE), and gain a recognised qualification. The YE programme is complementary to other courses, enabling students to make real use of a foreign language as well as numerical, artistic, design, English and presentational skills.
In Years 12 and 13, students are given information and support on applying for jobs, to universities, preparation of CV, student grants and loans, work experience and take part in the three-day Management Conference. Year 12 students attend a careers morning held in school and undertake a one-week period of work-shadowing.

Sports & Pastoral Care
A major strength of our school is our pastoral structure. Our students are very well supported by Form Tutors, Heads of Key Stage, Learning Mentors and a Well-being Coordinator. We promote emotional and physical well-being and currently have the best range of sporting opportunities ever on offer at LGGS. Our Duke of Edinburgh programme, which builds resilience and team work, continues to grow very successfully. New leadership initiatives in Key Stage 4 encourage pupils to reflect on their own personal qualities and achievements as well as celebrate their individuality and talents. Other projects in school are designed to improve well-being and develop resilience, teaching our pupils to reflect and learn from setbacks and to always aim high.

Pastoral Care
Each year 7 and Year 8 Form is allocated a number of sixth form students as Form Mentors. They work closely with students in their form on a weekly basis to support their transition from primary school. They help with organisation, making friends, and are a listening ear when there are problems and can direct students to support in school.
In addition, the Peer mentoring programme provides support for younger students from years 7 to 9. Peer Mentors can help with issues ranging from organisation skills to friendship problems. This can be provided via individual mentoring meetings or by class buddies visiting form groups on a regular but informal basis. Form Mentors and Peer Mentors are closely supported by the Assistant Head of Sixth Form, who also co-ordinates the training that mentors require to fulfil this role.
Educational and information sessions are also offered via a comprehensive programme of PSHE which covers and includes relationship, sexual health and wellbeing issues.
