Who sets and marks the Assessment Tests?

The Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning Paper is set and scored by GL Assessment; the answer sheets are marked using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR).

The written English paper will be marked by staff at the school.

Specialisation

In the first year, pupils study either French or German. In the second year all pupils begin a second language chosen from French, German, Russian and Latin.

Outdoor Pursuit Centre

Cwm Penmachno is within the Snowdonia National Park about 5 miles from Betws y Coed. The Latymer Foundation bought a former primary school there in 1966 and has since developed it into a well equipped residential Centre, accommodating up to forty pupils and staff. All pupils in Year 7 and Year 9 have the opportunity to spend a week at the Centre, taking part in a variety of outdoor activities. These include hill walking, orienteering, mountain biking, climbing, abseiling, canoeing, pony trekking, raft building and skiing. Other activities include the annual ‘Fourteen Peaks’ challenge when more senior students and staff test their stamina on an extensive programme of hill walks.

Latymer has links with schools in France, Germany and Russia and exchange visits take place regularly.

Our Drama students have been on tour with production tours to France, Germany and the Lake District. Many other trips take place; in the last few years our geographers have been to Iceland, classicists to Italy, artists to New York, skiers to the French Alps, canoeists to the Ardeche, and junior boy and girl footballers to Holland and Italy. Every summer our senior musicians tour in Europe and in recent years have played to audiences in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany and Tuscany. In addition there are many day visits associated with the curriculum for pupils from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, including theatres, museums, places of worship and in previous years, Vimy Ridge on the WW1 Western Front.

Many of our pupils take part in musical activities and there are numerous opportunities for performance. Students are able to perform in their annual year group concerts and in whole concerts as part of one of the are five orchestras, a Concert Band, choirs and many other vocal and instrumental ensembles.

There is an outstanding musical tradition which leads to a wide range of music making, much of it of very high quality, mainly as an extra-curricular activity. Drama, sport and outdoor pursuits are also very strong.

The House system engenders much purposeful activity: inter-House competitions in sport, drama and music and non-competitive ventures such as fund raising for a wide variety of charities.

12 science laboratories which have all been fully refurbished and our 6 technology rooms which have been similarly upgraded.

The School has the benefit of a large Lending Library (The Ashworth and War Memorial Rooms) and a Learning Resources Centre which together hold over 15,000 books and other resources.

Students have access to a dedicated sports hall, fitness studio, gymnasium and approximately 12 acres of playing fields laid out, according to season, for football, hockey, rugby, cricket, rounders and athletics.

GCSE Results

Overall the results were as follows:

We have seen a 3.1% increase on last year’s results at level 9 and an increase of 2.1% at level 8/9.

Students excelled and received grade 9’s in physics, biology, chemistry and maths.

The school also offered students Latin, Russian and Media Studies at GCSE level.
