Test Type: Secondary Transfer Test/GL
Children sit two test papers in September of the year prior to proposed admission. Children sit both papers on the same day. Each test paper is approximately 60 minutes in length including an introduction and practice examples. The STT assesses verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills. The child’s scores in each of the three skills areas are age-standardised to ensure children are placed on an equal footing regardless of when their birthday falls in the year. The three age-standardised scores are then added together to give the child’s Secondary Transfer Test Score (STTS). Children need an STTS of 121 or more in order to automatically qualify for a grammar school place.

In 2019, the School was ranked third in England for state school sport by the School Sports Magazine. This is an amazing accolade and testament to the provision and expertise of the staff and students. The music of the School is beyond compare. A truly inspirational music department continues to produce the finest music events that have to be experienced. With House Music the fastest selling event on the calendar with tickets selling out for the 2019 event in under 30 minutes. In 2020 the event moves to the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, a testament to the students and the School’s standing in music productions.

Facilities
The school is situated on an attractive site on Walton Road in Aylesbury and has the benefit of substantial grounds and playing fields to the rear of the school. Sporting facilities are excellent and include a number of tennis and netball courts next to our Sports Hall.
We aim to provide the best possible environment for learning; in the past few years we have built a new Sixth Form Centre with dedicated study facilities, a state-of-the-art Library and completely refurbished our Science laboratories and tower block. Specialist teaching rooms are very well equipped and in addition, there are two large halls which are used for assemblies, concerts and school productions.
As well as the school wide computer network with around 300 PCs and high speed internet access, students make good use of our cloud based resources and services with the use of their own devices in lessons. Our 1:1 scheme allows our teachers and students to make good use of the latest technology in their teaching and learning.
Aylesbury Music Centre is situated on our site and a close working relationship exists between the two establishments.
Music
Instrumental lessons are available to all students. Tuition is given by private music teachers and staff from Aylesbury Music Centre which is based on our site.
Instrumental lessons in groups with tuition are available on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, guitar, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
Girls who receive tuition are expected to belong to a school band or group of their standard and to take part in concerts.
All girls who play an instrument or sing are welcome to participate in the rich musical life of the school. We aim to achieve the highest standards across the widest range of musical activities and to have fun.

Sports
Sport is an integral part of life at CGS. All students throughout the School, including the Sixth Form, have compulsory PE as part of their curriculum. In addition, we see competitive sport as hugely important and both boys and girls across the School enjoy significant success in a range of disciplines.
Boys compete in football, rugby, basketball, cricket, tennis and athletics. Our girls also play competitive football, rugby, cricket, tennis and athletics alongside netball, hockey and rounders. Our teams are often County or District Champions with a good number of boys and girls being selected to join County or Regional squads. There are also students representing their country in sports ranging from rugby to fencing and from swimming to shooting. Amongst current CGS students are some potential future Olympians and we do all we can to support them during their time here.
Along with the disciplines you would expect to find on offer such as football and cricket, students can also choose from activities such as gymnastics, cross country, lacrosse, badminton, swimming and Zumba. They can also make use of the fully equipped gym at Chesham Leisure Centre which is situated right next to the school. In addition, there are annual ski trips on offer to all students to resorts in Europe and North America.
We are the only state school in the country with its own Equestrian Club and associated facilities. This is an extra-curricular activity (which carries on every day of the year, including Christmas Day) run by volunteers and entirely self-funded.

Our facilities are outstanding and include our own art gallery, drama studio, dark room and specialist music recording equipment. We have a ‘musician in residence’ to inspire and challenge our students’ creativity and talent.
Arts
Our annual art and photography exhibitions are a highlight of the calendar.
Training Leaders
We aim to give our students opportunities to develop their leadership skills throughout their school life. Students start to take responsibility from Year 7. They can be Learning Leaders, Sports Leaders, Junior and Senior House Prefects. At the very top of the School, in Year 13, there is the opportunity to become House or Vice House Captain or Head Boy or Girl. These positions are highly prestigious and there is a rigorous selection process. Those who are appointed have a high profile within the School.
Our younger students also represent the School as the first point of contact in Reception, as ambassadors conducting pupil and parent tours, but also in the decision-making process of the School as members of the Student Leadership Group, or as pupil panellists as part of the interview process for any new staff.
Students are given the opportunity to lead their own projects, such as the Walk to School Campaign which has enabled committed Sixth Formers to present their achievements to MPs at Westminster. Participation in schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Enterprise and World Challenge also enables students to develop their own leadership skills and qualities.
Trips
Each year there are numerous trips, visits and activities which support and enhance the curriculum as well as aspiration, enterprise and enrichment days. In addition, a number of voluntary trips run during the school holidays. Some of these are largely recreational, others designed to build the leadership and collaborative skills of our students and to enhance their personal development.

Each year over 95% of leavers move on to Higher Education either immediately or after a gap year. The most popular universities are the research intensive institutions. Typically, around 20 students will win places at Oxford or Cambridge and significant numbers move on to universities such as Warwick, Southampton, Bristol, Exeter and Nottingham. In addition, we take as much pleasure in seeing students achieve well on courses such as Art Foundation degrees or specialist computer programming courses.
We have supported an increasing number of students in applications to foreign universities, including Dartmouth, University of British Columbia, Macgill, Trinity College, Dublin, Groningen, Amsterdam and Maastricht. In recent years students have won soccer, rowing, golf and tennis scholarships to US colleges.

Music
Creativity is a hallmark of Challoner’s. Choirs, orchestras and bands perform to an exceptionally high standard, often collaboratively with our friends at Dr Challoner’s High School for girls. The inclusive Swing Band tours regularly, while the smaller Jazz Band performs to an exceptionally high standard. The biennial musicals are well known for their excellence.
Sports
Participation is valued very highly, while excellence is demonstrated through the performances of our school teams, which often achieve success at county, regional and national level.

Music plays a major role in the life of Dr Challoner’s High School, thanks to a thriving and extensive extra-curricular programme which caters to all levels of ability.
We currently boast five choirs, two orchestras, a wind band and a variety of instrumental chamber ensembles, all of whom rehearse on a weekly basis and have multiple opportunities to perform both in school and within the wider community. In collaboration with Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, we also form a Joint Choir and Orchestra and the ever-popular Swing Band!

Ski Trips
Senior (Year 11-13) Ski/Snowboarding Trip to Austria
This ski trip takes place every year during February Half Term, allowing plenty of time for preparation before the vitally important summer examinations. Students in the past have had a great time skiing or snowboarding and enjoyed making lots of new friends. A residential trip such as this builds self-confidence and independence.

High Performance Learning
We were one of the pilot schools with whom Professor Eyre and her team worked to develop and tailor the programme and we were delighted to become the first grammar school to be accredited with HPL's 'World Class School' Award in 2019.

We are immensely proud of the numbers of pupils we have competing across the different sports. We have had students now and in the past achieve international honours in many sporting field of endeavour including Hockey, Athletics, Swimming, Kayaking and of course we are one of the few state schools competing and achieving outstanding success in Rowing. Music
There are many opportunities in Music with Boys’ Choir and Girls’ Choir for Key Stage 3 and the chance to play in one of the many instrumental ensembles. The Junior Musical is staged in theatre every other year and there are open-air concerts for classical, jazz and rock musicians. Our Music programme beyond the curriculum involves hundreds of pupils with opportunities to sing in nine choirs with different repertoire including SATB Cantorum, Gospel, Chapel Choir and the all male Madriguys.

Dance
There is an annual Dance production for all Year 7 and Year 8 take part in one of the highlights of the Christmas Calendar – Strictly Come Dancing. Students can be in a male or female or co-ed Dance company and can audition for our Elite Dance Company EVOLVE from which male and female dancers have progressed recently to LABAN, London Contemporary and Central.

Trips
The calendar of trips for students across the Key Stages reflects the school’s belief that learning can extend well beyond the classroom. There are cultural visits to the theatre, galleries, museums and creative writing retreats. Field Trips allow students to do practical explorations in Geography, Geology, Biology and History. There are expeditions to Norway, the Arctic and Uganda and Sports and Arts Tours have most recently gone to New York, Australia and Malta. Every year KS4 pupils visit the Space Camp in Alabama and the Berlin as well as taking part in long-established exhanges with our partner schools in France, Germany and Spain.

Music
At RGS we are extremely proud of our long-standing musical traditions and we are dedicated to ensuring that our young men receive the best musical education that we can offer.
Many of our Old Wycombiensians have made their names in the musical world, such as Richard Hickox (1948–2008 - conductor), Ian Drury (1942–2000 - rock musician) and Lawrence Power (b. 1977 - international viola player) with many more pursuing a career in the music profession.
To help nurture and inspire the next generation of musicians, our Junior students receive a weekly 75-minute music lesson throughout Year 7 and in modules in Year 8 and 9. This allows them the opportunity to learn how to play the ukulele, guitar and keyboard, as well as a wide selection of brass instruments. Following on from these classes, many of our young men are inspired to continue their instrumental education through individual or small group lessons and several of these students may eventually go on to read music at university or pursue further practical study at a top conservatoire.
We are also proud to be the home of the Chiltern Music Academy (CMA) which meets at RGS on Friday nights and at Wycombe High on Saturday mornings. Many of our students also take part in Chiltern Music Academy; performing regularly in their concerts and taking part in their international tours every other year.

Career Guidance

Combined Cadet Force
RGS has a long history of association with the armed forces, dating back to 1909 when the School’s Officers’ Training Corps (OTC) was founded. Today, around 180 boys participate in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), with Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force sections. We are the only state school in Buckinghamshire offering a tri-service CCF.

Sports
The RGS has a proud history and tradition of sporting provision, whether it is for the elite athlete or the beginner. Sport plays a major part in the curricular, extra curricular and social life of the school.
Our sport facilities are impressive, extensive and includes rugby pitches, indoor and outdoor cricket nets, tennis courts, astro-turf pitch, fitness suite, sports hall, grass cricket squares and an indoor swimming pool.
The boys regularly compete in the national finals in many different sports. In recent years we have had boys who have gained international honours in rugby, hockey, fencing, hockey, rowing, gymnastics, golf, swimming, squash and athletics.

We have an established reputation as a school which nurtures the artistic talents of students, and have produced some noteworthy world class actors and musicians. This is despite having no dedicated rehearsal or performance space – or even any stage curtains. It is time to do our emerging young artists and artistes justice, and design a multi-use arts, drama, music and dance facility so that we can showcase talent but also provide a much-needed facility to enable us to work closely with other schools and community arts groups. Maths
Wycombe High School was designated in July 2014 as one of only 34 Maths Hubs in England. This is an extremely prestigious achievement for us and one that that has seen us lead many exciting new initiatives over this last year and be able to expand our mathematics teaching team as a consequence.
We have hosted or led focus days for mathematics in partnership with the Further Maths Support Programme, The Royal Institution and the Maths Association; we have delivered training sessions for primary colleagues, run conferences for girls in Mathematics, Physics and Engineering in conjunction with other girls’ schools nationally and sent teachers from primary schools to China to learn about mathematics mastery.
We have a large and growing mathematics team. They are all mathematics specialists with high level degrees from a range of impressive universities. They support approx. 200 girls per annum to study mathematics to AS or A level in our school: this is remarkable and quite unusual in an era when many young people, particularly girls do not engage with mathematics beyond GCSE.
It is of even more significance when one realises that our girls study mathematics often alongside the Arts, as well as with the more traditional option of Sciences.

Music
Wycombe High School has been very fortunate to have had some inspirational young musicians performing and delighting audiences at concerts, music festivals, musicals, carol services, recitals – in school, in the surrounding area of High Wycombe and in several European countries – over a period of many years.
The tradition of excellent music making continues today and our instrumentalists and singers continue to give pleasure to all those who hear them. In addition they raise their musical skills to new levels of achievement and never fail to give of their very best.
The ‘icing on the cake’ is the chance to participate on the Music Tour. Taking our talented students to Europe to give concerts in stunning surroundings to enthusiastic audiences is a real privilege and the rapturous ovations they receive are just rewards for their hard work.
