Music

There is a strong tradition of music- making in the school. A large variety of choral and instrumental groups, ensembles and orchestras meet at lunch time and after school. There are opportunities to learn to play musical instruments and many pupils avail themselves of these. Lessons are given by visiting teachers and take place in the lunch-hour, before and after school or during school hours.

Duke of Edinburgh/Cadets

Girls from year 9 upwards may choose to join Bournemouth school’s combined cadet Force. Girls in year 10 and above can also join the popular Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Sports

The main school activities include netball, tennis, rounders, rugby, football and athletics and school teams are maintained at

all levels. Aerobics, badminton, dance, football, gymnastics, table tennis and trampolining clubs meet regularly.

Partnership With Parents

As well as termly written progress checks and a annual report there is also parental online access to our pupil tracking system. All parents of pupils at the school are automatically members of the Parent-school Association and are encouraged to take an active interest in it.

The impressive facilities include an 8 badminton court sports hall, a cardio-vascular gymnasium, 4 floodlit tennis courts and a floodlit 3G rubber crumb astro-turf pitch. The school fields comprise 3 rugby and 2 football pitches, a 400m running track and 2 cricket squares.

They also have access to an extensive extra-curricular programme including non-curriculum sports e.g. fencing, archery and surfing. Our high-quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity.

Music

Our music department has two large teaching rooms, both equipped with a set of keyboards as well as an array of classroom percussion. In addition to this we have a set of African drums and Samba instruments. The teaching rooms are complemented by six practice rooms, a large ensemble room and an ICT room equipped with specialist software. We have a Kawai Grand Piano and a range of orchestral instruments including Double Bass, Tuba, Euphonium, Trumpet, Trombone, and Violins that can be loaned to students.

Virtual Learning

Students are enrolled on our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) when they join the school. Departmental staff upload a large selection of subject resources to enable students to extend their knowledge or revise a topic covered at school or to help with the completion of homework. The VLE is widely used for revision before examinations and is available at school and from home.

Career Advice

As a school we buy in the services of an accredited Careers Advisor. This ensures that our students have access to impartial and independent careers advice and guidance from a professional and up to date source. The Careers Advisor also undertakes tracking and monitoring of students who have left Bournemouth School, either post 16 or post 18, and can help to ensure that they are being properly supported through their next phase in their career.

Fresh Meals

The kitchens are well run by a fully qualified Catering Manager and the meals are cooked using only fresh ingredients.

We use a ‘cashless’ catering system where parents purchase credit via Wisepay (see below). The credit is attached to the student’s ID card and, when presented to the cashier, the value of the meal is deducted from the account.

International Links

Poole Grammar School has a long history of international links, exchanges and projects. Many of these are long running and on-going. Of particular interest at the moment is our link with Cape Academy in South Africa which involves several mini-projects for staff and students.

We also have very strong links with the community of Eskilstuna in Sweden, with reciprocal visits taking place for both staff and students.

Link To Exeter University

The South West Academic Trust is a group eleven grammar schools situated in the South West of England and Exeter University. The purpose of the trust is to provide mutual support to each other, share good practice and to enable students to meet and work with students from the other schools.

There are opportunities for students to take part in public speaking, debating and to be involved with project challenges. These usually happen at the University of Exeter. Staff have regular departmental conferences and there is also an annual conference for teachers which usually attracts about 150 delegates.

Learning Support

The Learning Support Team currently consists of 5 Learning Support Assistants and a part time Specialist Teacher under the management of the Head of Learning Support.
