When a place at an excellent grammar school is up for grabs, revising and studying is crucial. Young learners can feel the pressure at taking an important exam at just 10 or 11 years old, and as a result, they can struggle to concentrate or be filled with anxiety.
Parents can make their children feel less worried by reassuring them that the 11 plus exam is not the be-all and end-all of their education - which it is not. This could calm them down and even help them succeed. Yet, there are other ways to help learners study well and score even better. Here are some of the best study tips for primary school kids.
1. Ditch Those Black Pens
Scientists have explored the use of red and blue ink on cognitive performance. They found that red ink is great for recalling details and excellent for getting grammar right, while blue ink helps students think creatively. Next time you head to the store, pick up some red and blue pens and leave the black pens on the shelf!
2. Get Enough Sleep!
If your child is spending too much time in front of a screen and not going to bed early enough, they are not getting enough rest for optimum learning the next day. When your child has increased their study sessions after school hours, remember not to let this eat into their sleeping time. Studying longer on an evening but getting less sleep as a result may just be counterproductive.
3. Make a Study Schedule
To make sure the above doesn’t happen and to make sure your child can manage their schooling, extra activities, leisure time and additional study, it’s best to make a schedule. Set specific hours for studying and break it up to avoid brain drain or loss of motivation.
4. Study Together
Parents lead busy lives and it can be difficult to juggle work, dinner, ironing, washing and help your child study. However, parents should make studying a joint activity whenever they can. This will not only allow you to offer help, but it will increase your child’s experience of learning from an isolated one to a family one.
5. Eat Well
Just like sleep was key to help our kids’ brains function at their best, so is healthy nutrition. Make sure your child is eating lots of fruit, vegetables and having a big breakfast before school!
One quirky study tip that does work for some older students is wearing the same perfume in the exam as they did when studying. The scent is supposed to help with memory. Not all parents will be okay with their child wearing scents at a young age, but make sure you don’t switch your laundry powder the night before the exam!
